The Iron Hand near Essing im Altmühltal

The Iron Hand

near Essing in the national park Altmuehl valley

At the road from Essing to Hienheim where the foot-path from Haderfleck crosses, there is a signpost with a niche for paintings. A wrought iron hand with outstretched fingers shows the way. This old slgnpost is called "iron hand".

The story goes that once upon a time there was a needlewoman who passed here every day on her way to work. Sometimes she encountered a wolf here, and she Led the wolf with a plece of bread. One day she had no bread in her hag and could not feed the beast. So the wolf tore her up and devoured her. What was spared was only the right hand which had so often given him bread.
Friends found it, buried it and built a memorial.
